First Look at Mariko Tamaki’s New ‘Tomb Raider’ Series

Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki’s new Tomb Raider comic series is set to launch later this month and will be picking up where Rise of the Tomb Raider left off. It’s not yet clear whether the events of the game will be referenced in this new series, given that the Dark Horse website describes it as “a perfect jumping-on point for new readers”, but the first issue’s synopsis suggests that our heroine will be continuing her search for the world’s secrets of immortality. Lara Croft is pursuing a lost truth about the world that just might unlock the ... [Continue Reading]

Mariko Tamaki to Pen New ‘Tomb Raider’ Comic Series

Back in October, Dark Horse Comics announced that a new Tomb Raider comic series will be launched in February 2016 and will be penned by Canadian comic writer and artist Mariko Tamaki. Currently titled Tomb Raider II (not to be confused with the immensely popular 1997 game), the series will follow on from the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider and will see our heroine embark a new globe-trekking adventure as she continues to uncover more secrets of immortality, beginning with the search for a rare immortality-granting mushroom. Tamaki, who is best known for her graphic novels Skim and This ... [Continue Reading]

The Old Library at Trinity College, Dublin

Lara’s Travels: Trinity College Library, Dublin

Since this site was launched in March 2013, my Lara’s Travels feature has explored some of the cities and ancient sites seen in the Tomb Raider games, such as Prague’s Strahov District (Angel of Darkness), Zapadnaya Litsa in western Russia (Chronicles), and the tomb KV5 in Egypt (Last Revelation). And although the locations featured in the games and films are the ones that often stand out in most people’s memories, it would be remiss of me to say that the comics were lacking in memorable venues. Take, for example, the old Trinity College Library in Dublin, which made ... [Continue Reading]

Review: Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen #1

The first issue of Dark Horse’s new series, Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen, is finally out and it seems to be off to a great start so far. This five-part series by Invisible Republic writer Corinna Bechko follows the adventures of “Classic” Lara Croft and fellow archaeologist Carter Bell as they race against time to stop cultists from getting their hands on some ancient ivory artefacts and using them for their nefarious purposes. Will the intrepid duo save the world from destruction? I guess we’ll find out over the course of the next few months! For now, ... [Continue Reading]

Preview: Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen #1

Update: You can read my review of issue 1 over here! Dark Horse Comics has published a 6-page preview of Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen #1 and, quite frankly, 7th October can’t come soon enough. I need this new comic series in my life, like, now. First announced back in June, Frozen Omen is a 5-part mini-series set in the Lara Croft universe and is penned by Corinna Bechko, best known for her work on Star Wars: Legacy Volume II and Image Comics’ sci-fi series, Invisible Republic. The series will see our heroine race against time to track down some ancient artefacts and stop ... [Continue Reading]

Fans of the more light-hearted fare of the pre-reboot Tomb Raider games can look forward to a brand-new comic series this autumn: Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen (Update: Check out the preview of issue 1 over here or read my review). In an article published on Polygon earlier today, Dark Horse Comics announced that they will be publishing a series based in the Lara Croft universe that will be written by Corinna Bechko and drawn by Randy Green, whose name will be familiar to fans of the Top Cow Tomb Raider comic series. Lara Croft & the Frozen Omen will see our heroine team up ... [Continue Reading]

Review: Tomb Raider #13

It’s been a while since I reviewed a Tomb Raider comic. The last one I wrote was for Tomb Raider #8 back in October and that story arc concluded in January. I only have my own laziness to blame, I’m afraid.. Since so many months have passed and most people who are interested in the comics have probably read issues 9 to 12 by now, I thought I’d skip a few issues and pick up from issue 13, “The Watchers”, which marked the beginning of Rhianna Pratchett’s first solo story arc. Rhianna is, of course, no stranger to fans of the Tomb Raider franchise. Not only ... [Continue Reading]

The Book of Secrets: What the Mystery Book in Tomb Raider’s Final Scene Spells for the Future of the Series

Ever since eagle-eyed gamers spotted the word “Croatoan” written in the book seen in Tomb Raider 2013’s closing scene, there has been a lot of speculation as to what this may mean for the future of the Tomb Raider series. Were the development team hinting at the storyline or location for the next game, perhaps a mission to find the Lost Colony of Roanoke? Were there any other clues to Lara’s next adventure scribbled across the pages visible in the closing scene? Did the note written in Cyrillic actually mean anything? And could the logbook have belonged to a ... [Continue Reading]

Preview of Rhianna Pratchett’s New Tomb Raider Comic Story Arc

Listed as one of the 15 things Tomb Raider fans can look forward to in 2015, the Tomb Raider comics’ next story arc kicks off on 25th February 2015 and will be written by critically-acclaimed game writer Rhianna Pratchett. Rhianna Pratchett is obviously no stranger to the Tomb Raider franchise. Not only was she the lead writer of Tomb Raider 2013, she also wrote the 6-part omnibus Tomb Raider: The Beginning (which served as a pre-order incentive and prequel to the game) as well as co-wrote Tomb Raider issues 7 through 12 with Gail Simone. Issue 13 will mark the start of a new story arc ... [Continue Reading]

15 Things to Look Forward to in 2015

As I mentioned in an earlier blog post, 2014 was a fairly epic year for Tomb Raider fans and I have no doubt that 2015 will try its best to top the successes of the past year. As a fan community, what should we get excited about and what can we expect to see in 2015? Well, here are 15 things we Tomb Raider fans can look forward to next year: 1) The Rise of the Tomb Raider - This one’s a no-brainer. The highly anticipated sequel to 2013’s reboot will be coming to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in December 2015 (an official release date has yet to be confirmed) and, if the release ... Review: Tomb Raider #8

UPDATE: Tomb Raider #8 is now available to purchase on Amazon or Amazon UK. Picking up where issue 7 left off, Tomb Raider #8 sees Lara continue on her quest to find Kaz, Alex’s sister, who is hiding out in the derelict (and radioactive) city of Pripyat, Ukraine. But it soon becomes clear that Lara is not alone in her quest and that there’s a mad killer closing in on her. Featuring some gorgeous artwork from Derlis Santacruz, this is the second comic to be co-written by Gail Simone and Rhianna Pratchett and it sets out to answer some of the questions raised in #7 as well as ... Review: Tomb Raider #7

After a somewhat disappointing first story arc, Dark Horse Comics’ Tomb Raider comic series kicked off a brand new story arc in August 2014 with Tomb Raider #7. Co-written by comic writer Gail Simone and acclaimed game writer and long-time Tomb Raider afficionada Rhianna Pratchett, “Losing Her Grip!” (or is it “In Memoriam”?) is the first part of a new story arc that promises a return to the globe-trotting adventures of yesteryear. I’ll admit that I’m not a huge fan of the reboot game or of the new, more “human” Lara Croft so my opinion of ... [Continue Reading]

“Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals” Novel Coming This Autum

This novel is now available to purchase on Amazon and Amazon UK. BradyGames have announced that a brand new Tomb Raider novel will be coming our way later this year. Written by the bestselling author and comic book writer Dan Abnett and his partner Nik Vincent, Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals will continue and build upon the events of Tomb Raider 2013 and, like the ongoing comic series, will become canon within Crystal Dynamics’ reboot timeline. Little is known about the novel’s plot at this point beyond the rather vague synopsis on the BradyGames and GameStop websites: ... [Continue Reading]

Tomb Raider #1 - Guest Review by the Oracle of Film

Review by the Oracle of Film. Right from the first panel, we are thrown back into Yamatai. Lara Croft, before she was dubbed the Tomb Raider, running from the Solarii, jumping over cliffs and running along the ruins of burnt-out aircrafts. For a brief moment, we are back in that rebooted game, the tension dialled right back up to those pulse-pounding levels we played way back in 2013. However, this time something changes. The burning corpse of Alex, the broken body of Grimm and the bloody remains of Roth are there, beside her, whispering for her to join them. As it turns out, we are not back ... [Continue Reading]
