Currently titled Tomb Raider II (not to be confused with the immensely popular 1997 game), the series will follow on from the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider and will see our heroine embark a new globe-trekking adventure as she continues to uncover more secrets of immortality, beginning with the search for a rare immortality-granting mushroom.
Tamaki, who is best known for her graphic novels Skim and This One Summer, will be building on the foundation laid down by her predecessors, Gail Simone and Rhianna Pratchett, and in her interview with Comics Alliance, she told them that she had received a lot of support from Dark Horse Comics and Crystal Dynamics, stating that her goal is “to develop the character, to pull in more elements, to flesh out other parts of her character and life”.
When asked about the presence of friends and mentors in the reboot series, Tamaki explained that “Lara’s friends are her vulnerability and her strength. Lara’s friends are part of what make her adventures complex beyond just “Where is the door to this tomb? Oh, here it is.” They are the human element. They are something to lose, or fight for, or protect beyond whatever inanimate object is in the tomb”.
Little else in known about this new story arc at present but we do know that the first issue will be out on 17 February 2021 and that it will feature the artwork of Phillip Sevy. You can see a preview of Sevy’s work over on his Twitter account.
